転換点にたつ日本のクルマ文化

2024年10月、これまで欧米でしか開催されていなかった世界自動車博物館会議が初めて日本で開催されました。これに至った背景には、欧米での日本の旧車人気もあったといいます。この話の受け皿となったのはトヨタ博物館でしたが、2020年にWFFMM事務局より主催の依頼をいただいた時は、大変な重責を担うことになると身が引き締まる一方で、ついにそんな時がきたのか……という感慨もありました。長らく自動車文化の先輩として背中を追っていた欧米側から日本車の歴史文化にも興味を持っていただけるようになった象徴的な出来事だったからです。
しかし開催にあたっては、むしろスポットライトを当てられた日本側にそれを受けて立つ気構えがまだ充分醸成されていないことに気づく機会でもありました。
今や日本のクルマ文化は世界からも注目されはじめていると言えます。日本自動車殿堂もそうした中で果たされる役割も一層大きなものとなり、発展されることを願っております。

Japanese Automobile Culture faces a turning point

The first World Forum for Motor museum conference in Japan was held in October 2024 at Toyota Automobile Museum. One of the reasons that such conference came to Japan is booming interest in veteran Japanese cars among automobile fans of Europe and US. Upon request of the WFFMM, Toyota Automobile Museum agreed to host the conference in 2020, and at that time I was struck with an emotion that such chance finally came to us after so many years of building cars in Japan. It was a symbolic and emotional moment to realize that US and European automobile culture, which we have been following for so many years, has now come to learn Japanese automobile history and culture. But it also made us aware that the Japanese side, now under a spot-light, was not really ready to receive the conference guests. The three years in preparation for the conference flew past like a dream in order to make ourselves ready.
We fully realize that our Japanese automotive culture is under close attention of the world and the role of Japan Automotive Hall of Fame has equally magnified proportionally. We wish for healthy growth of the organization.
