Mr. Toshihiko Hirai

Born in 1935

Developed the first Roadster that revived the fun of open top sports car for the world

In order to revive a dwindling market, Mr. Toshihiko Hirai developed an open top sports car (OTS) that first and foremost appealed to the senses, rekindling the simple pleasures of driving. His efforts duly gave birth to a vehicle that earned Mazda a world record for the total production volume of OTS models. In recognition of these great achievements, the Japan Automotive Hall of Fame is honored to induct Mr. Toshihiko Hirai into the Hall of Fame.

The Roadster design incorporated traditional Japanese lines from the Noh mask shown.

The motto Hirai used to inspire engineers during the development of the Roadster (MX-5). It means togetherness of a horse and its rider.

Interior design of the Roadster also incorporated functionality of Japanese tea room.
